Do you ever take a selfie and wonder where the second chin came from? If so, you’re not alone. Fortunately, there are some easy and affordable fixes so the next time you grab your selfie stick, you’ll be looking great.
The first way is to freeze the fat off with CoolSculpting. This technology has been around for many years and works by freezing the fat cells and thereby disrupting them. Your body then clears away the destroyed fat cells. Typically, areas like love handles, the abdomen, and inner and outer thighs are treated with this process. The recently introduced cool-mini head can be used to correct smaller areas like a double chin.
The procedure is done in office, is totally noninvasive, and is not painful. The applicator is applied to the area under the chin and takes about an hour. Minimal swelling is seen, and there is no downtime. You can do this on your lunch hour and go right back to work without restrictions. The best thing is that just like traditional liposuction, most patients only require one treatment.
The other treatment for this area, and for other small annoying areas of fat, is Kybella. Kybella is injected into the fat under the chin. Again, this is done in the office and does not require anesthesia or sedation. The series of injections takes 10-15 minutes and is fairly painless. Most patients will see some swelling in the area for 24-48 hours. For most patients, a second treatment is required 6 weeks after the first. With Kybella, the surgeon can actually sculpt the jawline with the placement of the injections.
Lastly, there is traditional liposuction. For small areas, like under the chin, this can be done in the office under local anesthesia, and it takes about an hour. You may have some bruising, and swelling is usually minimal. Like Kybella and CoolSculpting, final results are seen after about 8-12 weeks.
So how do you decide which treatment is best for you? The size of the area and the amount of fat you need to remove will determine which procedure will work best, and this is something your surgeon can help you determine. Make the call, and you’ll be on your way to improving your selfie!
