Understanding the Difference Between a Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift
Healthy breasts come in many different shapes, sizes, and densities, but not every woman feels comfortable with the appearance of her bust—especially after weight gain or pregnancy. There are several surgical options available to women depending on their desired results. While a board-certified plastic surgeon should ultimately be the one to help a patient determine which procedure is more appropriate, understanding the differences between the two prior to the initial consultation can help women prepare for this conversation.
What Is a Breast Lift?
Aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight loss can all result in lost elasticity in the breasts over time. This stretching of the skin can lead to sagging or drooping breasts, which can range from mild to severe. Breast lift surgery can adjust breasts to a perkier position and addresses breast shape rather than cup size.
What Is Breast Augmentation?
The goal of breast augmentations is to increase and enhance breast size and shape with saline or silicone implants. During the consultation prior to this procedure, the plastic surgeon considers the size, shape, type, and placement of implants to help achieve desired results. Choosing between implant types often depends on the amount of natural breast tissue a patient has. Women with very little tissue may notice more natural results with silicone implants, while saline can add more volume and define breast shape for patients with ample tissue prior to the procedure.
Which Procedure is Right for Me?
Depending on body goals, you may be interested in bigger, fuller breasts or simply just altering height of the bustline. A patient’s breast size and position will often dictate which procedure will help achieve the desired result; however, it’s not uncommon for patients to undergo both procedures.
